Erik Holmlin Erik Holmlin, Ph.D.
President and CEO

Erik Holmlin has two decades of experience in the life science and health care industries. His expertise spans technology development and commercialization, global marketing, commercial operations, venture financing, mergers & acquisitions and intellectual property.

Recently, he served as president and CEO of GenVault Corporation, a life science company bringing innovative solutions to biosample management. He merged GenVault with IntegenX, Inc. in January of 2011. He also served as an entrepreneur in residence (EIR) at Domain Associates, LLC, a leading dedicated life science venture-capital firm. Prior to these roles, Erik was chief commercial officer at Exiqon A/S, where he was responsible for global sales, marketing, and clinical affairs for two businesses: Oncology Services in a CLIA lab and Consumables Business in Life Sciences Research.

In 2001 Mr. Holmlin led the formation of GeneOhm Sciences, Inc., for which, over a span of 5 years, he was director of chemistry, senior technology director, vice president of technology and business development, and vice president of marketing.

At GeneOhm, he also led or participated in securing three rounds of venture financing and in the acquisition of Infectio Diagnostics, Inc., and orchestrated GeneOhm's acquisition in 2006 by Becton Dickinson. As an executive at BD, he then served as vice president of marketing and development, responsible for multiple product launches and managing more than 80 employees in three sites and two countries.

Mr. Holmlin was a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, Cambridge, and a National Science Foundation predoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena (Caltech). He holds MBA degrees from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and the Columbia University School of Business, earned his Ph.D. in chemistry at Caltech, and received his AB degree in chemistry at Occidental College, Los Angeles.

Han Cao Han Cao, Ph.D.
Founder and Chief Scientific Officer

Han Cao founded BioNano Genomics in 2003 as a spin-out of the Princeton University laboratories where he was working on a multi-million dollar project funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Dr. Cao is the key co-inventor of the company's core single-molecule nanoscale whole genome analysis technology. Prior to that, he was a postdoctoral fellow working on stem cell and DNA repair system at Institute for Human Gene Therapy of University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. His diverse experience includes molecular biology, microarray and genomics technology development, single-molecule analysis as well as micro and nanofluidics design and fabrication. Dr. Cao leads multiple federal government funded projects at BioNano Genomics and served on many grant review panels. He oversees the scientific and technical direction of future technology and product development at BioNano Genomics. Dr. Cao received a B.S. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Delaware.

Garth Monroe, CPA Garth Monroe, CPA
Vice President & CFO

Garth Monroe joined BioNano Genomics in 2011. He has more than 11 years of experience in finance and operations, serving in management positions at both venture capital and publicly financed companies. Prior to joining BioNano Genomics, he served as CFO for Epocal, a multi-national, venture-backed medical device company. There, he played an integral role in the $255 million sale of the company to Alere. He was a station manager for JetBlue Airways and also a financial analyst for United Technologies. He served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and received a BS in business administration from the University of Connecticut and an MBA from the University of Virginia, Darden School of Business.

Todd Dickinson Todd Dickinson, Ph.D.
Vice President, Product Development & Marketing

Todd Dickinson is an accomplished professional in the genomics field. Dr. Dickinson is a founding scientist of Illumina, Inc, and during his 12-year tenure there has held numerous technical and commercial roles of increasing responsibility. After earning undergraduate degrees in chemistry and theology from St. Olaf College, and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Tufts University under the direction of Professor David Walt, Dr. Dickinson helped start Illumina in 1998 based on ideas conceived in the Walt lab. Dr. Dickinson helped establish the product development processes at Illumina and led several of the earliest project teams. He has directed programs in optical chemical detection, as well as the design and development of the array formats used in Illumina's industry-leading BeadArray® microarray product lines. Most recently he led several major strategic programs aimed at developing future-generation sequencing platforms. Dr. Dickinson has also held several commercial management roles. As Director of Product Marketing, his teams carried out the commercial launch of over 60 products in a two-year period, and achieved triple-digit growths across several product lines. Subsequently, Dr. Dickinson served as Director of Global Segment Sales, establishing and growing a team of technical sales specialists to actively target emerging markets ranging from Agriculture to Cytogenetics. He is an inventor on over ten patents and patent applications.

Xing Yang Xing Yang, Ph.D.
Vice President, System Development

Xing Yang joined BioNano Genomics in 2011. In his more than a decade of experience in the biotechnology industry, he has been involved in several successful startup companies. Prior to joining BioNano Genomics, Dr. Yang was Vice President of Technology and a co-founder of Epic Sciences, a cancer diagnostics company focusing on capture and characterization of circulating tumor cells. Previously, Dr. Yang was Vice President of Research at Helixis, a real-time PCR instrumentation company acquired by Illumina. Before that, he was Senior Director of System Development at Becton Dickinson (BD) Diagnostics--GeneOhm. Dr. Yang joined GeneOhm Sciences in 2001 as one of the early employees. Initially he led the development of GeneOhm's ePlex® platform, a multiplexed electrochemical detection system for molecular diagnostics. Later, he was responsible for all R&D efforts at GeneOhm's San Diego site and led the development of a diagnostics product for bloodstream infection. Dr. Yang started his scientific career as a Senior Scientist at ACLARA BioSciences. A prolific inventor, Dr. Yang holds fifteen US-issued patents. Dr. Yang received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
